A version 9 of visual pinball has been released, though not by randy himself. This version apparently targets cabinet users directly, and is the version used by Nanotech and David R Foley in releases included with their pinball game controllers. It evidently incorporates much of the ultrapin code as well. Still in its infancy, it is perhaps better to consider this a seperate product, as many older vp tables have been reported to malfunction when used with this release.

yeah, it seems like VP9 and VP8 are separate products, as you say.
9 was never intended to be backwards compatible.
When I complained about this at PN, Brian (Destruk) said that 9 is infinitely better technically - a lot of kludgy code and physics have been rewritten, and more advanced table authorship tools exist, which I can't comment on since I'm not yet up to speed on authoring tables.
So 9 and 8 must live side-by side, presumably until all the old tables have been converted and 8 can die a natural death.
Having said that I really like the export features in VP9. I've just been playing around with 3D Arcade/emulaxion and it would be nice to have a little integration for front-ends, such as defined locations for playfields backglass and skin images.

Hopefully VP8 will NEVER die! I only code in vp8 as vp9 is too tough to learn for a newbie like me. So don't be in such a rush to get rid of a great (albeit old) program. It is rough to convert the vp8's to vp9 anyways, and some pins can't be converted. anyhow. With the thousands of pins already made with vp8, it would be nigh impossible to try to convert them all. I am quite happy with vp8 Long Live vp8!!

(shudders at thought of converting all the 80 odd* tables I have made over the years) * 80 odd is an approximate guess. as in 80 something tables exist in the "made by me" folder on my hard drive - this doesn't include collaborations, and may include some unreleased work. As long as we all continue to use it, VP8 will never die.

Even though I'm not a table author, I have been into the VP scene since 02' or so. I would hate to modify tables just so they would work with VP-9.

Heya, I'm not a vp author (yet), but I will say I am used to VP8 quirks. Doesn't it seem logical that part of VP9's coding should implement full capatability with VP8's tables? If I was the one designing it, I would make sure of that aspect, but hey, what do I know? Anyhow, I'll continue to have VP8 on my machine, so I can play and enjoy most of your glorious tables, that I'm appreciative of. If I don't say it enough, thanks again for your inspirations of VP fun! -- Nyssa
